Faerie Wings
Body Extension for Sculpture Class
These wings were built as part of a sculpture class I was taking. We were charged with making a metal body extension, so I settled on wings welded to my ribcage.
The ribcage is made from 1/2” steel rod, welded on a MIG welder. The wings are EVA foam and fabric, and painted with acrylic paints.

I designed the ribcage to cover my body but be as if it was my bones brought outwards.

I bent the majority of the frame on a hossfeld bender, and the individual ribs were then welded on using a MIG welder.

The wings themselves were made from EVA foam I textured with pressure.

I then added a layer of fabric feathers, capped with another layer of textured EVA foam.

I painted the wings to look like oxidizing copper, and had little EVA foam tabs that slid over the wing frame to attach the two.

I made straps from fabric for comfort, and added craft feathers to decorate the shoulders and blend the wings into the body.

The ribcage laces in the front and back with leather cord decorated with beads, paint, embroidery floss, and buttons.

The wings are surprisingly comfortable, with the only issue being reliably fitting through doors.
